Baldock:
More
of its Kights and Days
by John Stanley Rider
PREFACE
Quite an interest was stimulated in both the ancient and recent history
of the town when — mainly as a local Souvenir for the Queen’s
Silver Jubilee in 1977— a small book, “BALDOCK — a
Brief Historial Review”, was published. Long ‘out-of-print’,
there have been requests for its re-issue, but now the opportunity is
being taken to not only up-date and enlarge, but also include a fresh
set of illustrations. Among these are rare and recently discovered items
of local interest, which will perhaps commend it to those who have the
original book, as well as to new residents and readers who may like to
know something of the Baldock story.
A writer well knows that a work
like this is as long as it wants to be, and has to decide what to leave
out as well as what to put in and must
eventually stop somewhere! This is a book for the general reader, and not
a complete history; all I have done is set down that which might interest,
inform, entertain — perhaps even educate, but not oppress with dry-as-dust
detail as yet more of Baldock Knights and Days are put on record.
