Ashwell Year Book 1996
Front cover

EDITORIAL
This edition of the Ashwell Year Book is the first one to have coloured photographs, due to the generosity of Michael Mills-Roberts of The Bushel and Strike who by taking a full colour advertisement on the Back Cover has made it possible.

The colour photographs depict scenes from “Ashwell at Christmas”, the top one being Terence Rochford as Town Crier; immediately below Kevan and Marion Morrison with daughter Laura outside the Post Office Stores, and in the bottom group Raksha McCann and Jenny Hunter making up a Victorian potion to cure all ills, with David and Rosemary Oliver on the Roast Chestnut Stall. Photos by David Sims.

There are four new items in this eighth edition: Policing of Ashwell, the Think Tank, News Briefs and Local Authors. I hope these will add both interest and usefulness. The Directory has been considerably revised, and together with the rest of the Year Book provides a great deal of information, which you will find constantly helpful to refer to.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Liz Poole has been a tremendous help in preparing this Edition in her capacity as Parish Clerk. Not only this, but with Judith Catterick shares in the word processing of the information.
Word Design Technology of Clifton is much involved with setting the advertisements and page make-up, while Cortney Publications is responsible for overall production.

We warmly thank our advertisers without whom a publication of this quality would be impossible.

Ashwell Year Book 1996

Welcome to the eighth edition of the Ashwell Year Book. Once again a triumph of etfort by Liz Poole and Norman Gurney, brought to your door free by the Parish Council.

This past year has seen a number of significant anniversaries. Those of you who attended the last Annual Parish Meeting in March will have witnessed the Parish Councillors dressed to celebrate the Centenary of the Parish Council. The other centenarian was Bill Hardyman who lived up to his name in December when he celebrated his 100th birthday in fine form. Only 50 years ago we saw the end of the second world war and this half century of peace was celebrated in May by various events, including the lighting of a Beacon, courtesy of Sam Wallace, and organised by the British Legion.
Twenty-one years ago saw the building of Wolverley House and the first provision of sheltered housing for our older residents in need of a bit of
supervision. Today the flats are very sought after and the community of Wolverley is a tribute to the warden, Diane James, and all those who live there.
Best wishes for the coming twelve months,
Fergus D Moynihan
Chairman, Ashwell Parish Council
